The Standard Model of particle physics, which is the current framework to understand particle physics, categorizes elementary particles into two main groups: fermions and bosons.
Fermions are particles that have half-integer spin and follow the Pauli exclusion principle, meaning that no two identical fermions can occupy the same quantum state. Quarks and leptons are examples of fermions. Quarks are the building blocks of protons and neutrons, which are composite particles found in the atomic nucleus. There are six types, or flavors, of quarks: up, down, charm, strange, top, and bottom. Leptons are another class of fermions and include particles like electrons, muons, and neutrinos.
